Collapsed Orangeburg Sewer Pipe Found In Sacramento CA 95864. Orangeburg pipe, also known as fiber conduit pipe. It was a tar paper-like material used for sewers from the 1860s through the 1970s. It enjoyed a resurgence during World War II when better materials were rationed for the war effort. There's plenty of it still in service though not reliably. The flimsy material was easily infiltrated by tree roots and it didn't respond well to cleaning from a drain cleaning machine or (Sewer Snake).
